Altogether I must have spent fifty years photographing locomotives beginning with a ‘KODAK BROWNIE 127’ camera and finishing with a ‘PENTAX DIGITAL K.X.’. Although I wasn’t as prolific as the well-known railway photographers (work tended to get in the way), I did manage to photograph some interesting and unusual subjects during my lifetime. At first I spent a lot of time (and money) chasing steam locomotives.
However, when travelling as a passenger on steam-hauled excursions all of my photographs seemed to include elbows, shoulder-bags, and the backs of peoples heads. So I switched my attentions to diesels and electrics – they weren’t so popular!
The contents of this book are just a small selection of the many photographs that I have taken during my life-time, although I have ‘bought-in’ a few images from photo libraries to improve the content. This book is not intended to be a fully comprehensive record of British Railways diesel classes, it is just a selection of the diesel locomotives that I managed to photograph, (plus a couple of interesting shots of steam-locos that I am particularly proud of), and I hope that the reader gets as much pleasure from perusing the photographs as I did taking them, also as can be gathered from the introduction of the book the photographs weren’t always easy to obtain.
