landscapes of the East Riding of Yorkshire emphasising the geographical factors behind the
historical events.
In a comprehensive review the text explores the many aspects of the county; its geological
origins, glacial modifications and physical configuration; the peopling of the land through many
centuries and the features they have left; the increasing impact of the population from Saxon
and Scandinavian settlers into the Norman and post Norman medieval period of expansion and
contraction; the more permanent effect of the agricultural, industrial and transport revolutions
in the East Riding; the contrasting range of urban development in York and Kingston upon
Hull to the varying fortunes of the small market towns and seaside resorts: the various rural
landscapes throughout the county; the impact of many changes and developments of the
