This is the story of Mike Sweeney’s rowing journey, from learning to row at school to ending up serving on the World Rowing Council for 14 years and chairing Henley Royal Regatta for over 20 years. On the way he rowed for Cambridge in the Boat Race, won medals at Henley and rowed for Great Britain at European and World Championships.
As Chairman of the Events Commission of World Rowing he was responsible for numerous World Cups, World Championships and for four Olympic Regattas.
During his Chairmanship, from 1993, Henley Royal Regatta grew in size from offering 15 events, all for men, to 20 events with four events for women. By 2027 there will be an equal number of men’s and women’s events.
His story covers 60 years of detailed insights and colourful tales of the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Races, the British Rowing Team, Henley Royal Regatta, World Rowing and Olympic Games.
