Mad Jack: The many lives of John Fuller, squire of Brightling

Almost two hundred years after his death, John ‘Mad Jack’ Fuller is mostly remembered as an eighteenth-century squire who built whimsical follies around his Sussex estate. Many curious stories overshadow Fuller’s philanthropy and patronage of the arts and sciences, while his arrest in the House of Commons is better known than the details of his long political career. This book delves beneath the myths and tall tales, to examine more closely the life and times of a colourful, charismatic and often contradictory character. Annette Lloyd Thomas is a historian and former teacher with a degree in Geography and History from York University, Toronto. Born in Lewes, East Sussex, Annette now lives on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. For the past twenty years, Annette has curated an online resource about the life and times of Georgian Sussex eccentric John ‘Mad Jack’ Fuller.
