ALL RECEIPTS GO TO LEUKAEMIA RESEARCH AT BART'S HOSPITAL.

Julia's photographs were pre-digital and she printed them herself, always searching for new ways with the colours or visual effect.  They reflect the pre-millenium era and many have the quality of impressionist art.

ALL RECEIPTS from the sale of this book GO TO LEUKAEMIA RESEARCH AT BARTS HOSPITAL, WHICH AIMS TO FIND CURES FOR BLOOD CANCERS LIKE LEUKAEMIA.

Barts is a centre of excellence for cancer research, working to understand the biology of leukaemias and harness this knowledge to identify new treatments.

Within the book there are portraits of Louis Theroux, P.J. Harvey, Patrick Moore and Alex James, Bruce Robinson and Jeffrey Bernard, taken in the nineties.  The original portrait of Jeffrey Bernard is held by the National Portrait gallery.

Julia Hember died of leukaemia in Barts Hospital in 2003 at the age of thirty- three. Lovingly assembled by her family and friends, this book, They sing to me, with echoes of time, stands as a unique record of her extraordinary vision. A selection of her remarkable photographs are interspersed with excerpts from her diaries and other writing.

All proceeds to the Centre for Haemato-Oncology at Barts Cancer Institute

From the Introduction by Jo Callam: “Julia saw the world obliquely yet was
utterly present; intensely, fully a part of it. Her singular vision grew from an unri-
valled talent for embracing the astonishing reality of life while filtering its beauties
and brutalities through her unique painterly, poetic perspective...
“Her photography explored lm to the full and embraced the promise of digital
work. Her images sit alongside her painting and writing in a body of work which
leaves one overwhelmed by the sheer depth and creativity which surges like a life
force throughout. After her tragically short life the strength of this vitality burns
on, undimmed. Julia had an unparalleled ability to make the unconscious visible in her subjects. Vulnerability reaches us from each frame, every captured phrase summoning laughter, sensitivity, candour and at times unbearable pain.”
