Whatever one’s view of the global warming hypothesis and the social movement it inspired, it must be clear by now that this unfolding story has darker as well as more creditable aspects. So, if one aspires to understand what may either be one of the greatest crises ever faced by humankind, or the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on a docile and gullible public, one must be prepared to examine the phenomenon from all sides. Because, whatever the final interpretation, it stands as one of the signal events of our time.

It is in this spirit that the present work was written. This and the following volume are dedicated to the task of interpreting and comprehending this extraordinary episode as a socio-psychological phenomenon. Given this approach, one must continually bear in mind that AGW (anthropogenic global warming) as an episode wears a ‘coat of many colors’. Accordingly, the present volume delves into some of its varied aspects, including claims regarding a scientific consensus, the contested status of the Medieval Warm Period and mid-20th century cooling, and the sometimes, heroic efforts made to demonstrate a relentless rise in temperature in recent decades. The same scalpel is also applied to the skeptical side of the controversy. Throughout, the goal is to achieve an overarching understanding of the entire episode.
