Ann Mehta and Jessica Clark are meeting at Ann's Norfolk home after a ten year estrangement. They had first met in Bombay in the 1960s when both were in their early twenties, both newly married and both living abroad for the first time. Their instant and intense friendship had ended badly. Their confrontation opens a door into the past that Ann has been struggling to keep closed, and forces her to revisit her life in India, to reassess her present life and rethink her plans for the future. Readers of the author's memoir 'No-one Mentioned Bandits' will find autobiographical echoes here. Like the writer, Ann meets and marries an Indian and goes to live in India but this fictional marriage follows a different, darker path. There is also a wide cast of characters who are affected by this and the book tells a story of friendship, loss and the rebuilding of life after loss.
