From the 1850s, railway managers and operators, engineers and accountants, demanded special purpose maps as the railways developed, specifical;ly for the industry and not designed for the public. What emerged was a particular cartographic genre, so-called "professional" railway maps. Now they are much sought after and collectable. This publication is an expanded chapter of a book in preparation, covering a much wider field, highlighting various types of railway maps, serving the public and freight companies, not just the "professional".
